Narrating our life

Verbal communication has been a huge struggle for Parker. Learning words and associating them to their meanings is very difficult and requires a significant amount of repetition before it sticks. In an attempted to give him as much exposure to repetitive verbalization as possible his therapists encouraged Scott and I to narrate our entire day to Parker.

We felt so silly at first. We talked through every single step of our lives for years.

“Mom is going to open the fridge. Now mom needs to find the eggs. Oh look there they are!”

We even did this out in public because it gave him a ton of necessary exposure. People thought we were totally crazy but eventually it just became our normal and it really did help him! We saw a huge increase in his word count after about a month of doing this.

To this day I occasionally catch myself narrating and it makes me smile because I think of how far Parker has come and how grateful we are for every single word.
